Norman Wisdom (1915 -- 2010)

Norman Wisdom was born in February 1915 in Marylebone, London. After an impoverished childhood he joined the army and it was there, during the Second World War period, that he discovered stability, companionship and a passion for performance.

On The Beat (1962), A Stitch in Time (1963) and The Early Bird (1965), made at Pinewood Studios. These films accounted for his fabled popularity in Albania, where they were among the few western movies screened. But his career ranged wider: he also appeared on Broadway, and in 1981, for example, he received critical acclaim for his dramatic role as a dying cancer patient in Going Gently.

Aged 90, in deteriorating health, Norman Wisdom retired from acting to spend more time with his son, daughter and grandchildren. He died on 4 October 2010 on the Isle of Man, where he'd spent most of his time in retirement.
