Nora Ephron (1941 -- 2012)

Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and director Nora Ephron, has died aged 71 from leukemia. 

Daughter of Henry and Phoebe,  Ephron will be best remembered for romantic comedy hits ‘When Harry Met Sally…’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, ‘You’ve Got Mail’ and more recently the biography of cooking professional Julia Child in ‘Julie & Julia’.

Ephron was born in New York on 19 May 1941.  Graduating from the prestigious Wellesley College in Massachusetts, her professional career started in journalism before her autobiographical novel based on the breakup of her second marriage ‘Heartburn’ propelled her in a different direction.  The novel was to later become a hit comedy with Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson in 1986.  Three Academy Award  nominations followed for screenplays ’Silkwood’ (1983), ‘When Harry Met Sally…(1989)’ and ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ (1993) which she wrote and directed.

The three times married Ephron was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006 and died 26 June 2012.  She leaves her husband of 20 years and 4 children.
