John Peter Gilmore (1931 -- 2013)
TV star Peter Gilmore passed away following a long illness on 3 February 2013.
Born in Leipzig, Germany on 25 August 1931 the star of BBC’s The Onedin Line and many of the Carry On films settled in North Yorkshire at the age of six. He left school at the age of 14 to pursue an acting career. Following a short spell studying the arts, Gilmore joined the army. It was whilst serving in the army that his singing talents took to the fore leading him to join a singing group after his army discharge. Singing and stage productions did not fulfill his acting ambitions so he gave up music to concentrate once more on his acting career. He soon to found success in the popular comedy series of Carry On films, starring in Carry On Up The Khyber, Carry On Columbus, Carry On Henry, Carry On Again Doctor, Carry On Cowboy to name a few but it was his casting in the long running BBC drama The Onedin Line for which he was best known. Gilmore played the role of James Onedin for over 10 years in the popular weekly TV drama. Following the end of the series, Gilmore appeared in various shows including Heartbeat, Casualty, One By One, Doctor Who and theRuth Rendell mysteries.
Gilmore leaves wife actress Anne Stallybrass who played his on screen wife in The Onedin Line, and his son James from his first marriage to Una Stubbs.
