Irvin Kershner (1923 -- 2010)

Irvin Kershner, born in Philadelphia in 1923, had a long-standing interest in painting, photography and design. He studied music and photography before making documentaries and features.

Kershner worked with Sir Sean Connery in 1966 on his romantic drama A Fine Madness and again when he directed the star's unofficial return as 007 in Never Say Never Again (1983). He remains best known for helming The Empire Strikes Back, which is considered by many to be his best film in the Star Wars series. His other varied work includes The Eyes of Laura Mars starring Faye Dunaway, Up the Sandbox with Barbra Streisand and Robocop 2.

Kershner died on 27 November 2010 at his home in Los Angeles after a three and a half year battle with lung cancer.
